Christopher Boone is a fifteen-year-old boy with Asperger's syndrome who writes a book about his investigation of the murder of his neighbor's dog. As he goes through his journey, he also learns more about the people around him, his family, and who he is. In Mark Haddon's book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, he utilizes logos, symbolism, and illustrations to further the audience's understanding of an autistic person's thought process.
"When the book was first published in 2003, the book was promoted as a glimpse into Asperger's syndrome. . . his character adheres to some common ideas about neuratypical people . . . he has unusual mental abilities . . . and he's unsettlingly devoid of empathy for other people." -- Alison Croggon, The Guardian

One of the most prominent themes seen in the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is fear. Christopher is someone who likes things to be logical and straightforward, and what he faces is anything but that. On his investigation to discover who murdered his neighbor's dog, he is forced to socialize with strangers and leave the comfortable order of life he's always lived. However, through facing his fears and overcoming obstacles he's always struggled with, he ends up not only solving the mystery but finding out the truth behind his home life and growing personally.

One of the other significant themes of the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime is identity. In this book, Christopher is someone who has a good sense of who he is and what his capabilities are, but is majorly defined by his autism. While he embarks upon his adventure to solve the mystery of his neighbor's dog, he is forced to confront several things that make him question who he is as a person and what he can honestly handle, and truly tests his strengths and limits.

"It forces you to adopt, wholesale, the point of view of someone with whom you may initially feel you have little in common . . . like Cristopher, we are all continually trying to impose internal symmetry on the bewildering world outside." -- Ben Brantley, New York Times
